The Department of Forest- and Soil Sciences, Institute of Silviculture is currently seeking a

We’re seeking to hire a PhD student in the lab of Rupert Seidl (http://www.wabo.boku.ac.at/seidl.html).
This research is part of an ongoing effort to investigate changes in climate and disturbance regimes in
the forest ecosystems of Central Europe, understanding their consequences on the provisioning of
ecosystems services, and developing adaptation options for forest ecosystem management. We are
offering a dynamic working environment in an international team at the frontier of quantitative forest
ecosystem research in Europe. BOKU is one of the top tier schools in the environmental sciences in
Europe, and the city of Vienna consistently ranks among the cities with the highest quality of life
globally.
The successful candidate will :
Study ecosystem patterns and processes and their response to disturbance and climate, using
a combination of empirical and remote sensing approaches (e.g., dendroecology, Lidar)
Contribute to the development, parameterization, and evaluation of a spatially explicit forest
landscape model (http://iland.boku.ac.at)
Apply these tools to answer questions on past and potential future trajectories of the forest
landscapes in order to quantify their resilience to global change, and
Disseminate results to the scientific community via peer-reviewed publications
Required skills and qualifications
Master’s degree in forestry, landscape or disturbance ecology, or related fields
Proficiency in English
Desirable skills and qualifications
Strong quantitative abilities
Programming skills and/or
Experience in ecosystem modelling
