Call for Assistant/Associate Professor in Oregon

The Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Oregon is seeking applicants for a tenure-track faculty position to teach the history of landscape architecture in concert with other topics. This is a full-time (9-month), appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, to begin Fall 2014.

In addition to teaching core courses in history, applicants should be interested in teaching undergraduate and graduate design studios, as well as one or more topical courses of particular interest to the applicant. Faculty members are expected to possess strong teaching skills and the capacity to bring rigorous scholarship to inform creative thinking and practice. We seek applicants who aspire to excellence in nurturing creative, integrative design exploration and critical thinking in students. The right person will be thoughtful and skillful at teaching through his or her own work and through classes and critiques. Teaching and/or professional experience is desired, as is a developing scholarly agenda. The department is seeking an individual with compelling interests, developing ideas, and experience toward conveying lessons from the history of landscape architecture to a new generation of professionals, especially as these lessons pertain to landscape decision making in contemporary settings. As a department, we encourage diversity of thought that stems from a diversity of life experiences, research foci, and professional strengths. We expect that faculty members joining our department will contribute to our goal of inclusive excellence.

The department faculty is intentionally interdisciplinary, and offers coursework covering a wide spectrum of landscape architectural interests and areas. Teaching projects occur throughout the state and region, including frequently in Portland, as well as in collaboration with other departments, universities, and local, state, federal and non-governmental organizations.

For us, landscape architecture is a rigorous discipline and a demanding profession broadly centered in human experience and culture in the context of nature at many scales. We strive to create landscapes that respect the land’s processes and integrity, aid in the fulfillment of human potential, and aspire to art.

The Department of Landscape Architecture is located within the School of Architecture and Allied Arts, which includes eight other departments and programs: Architecture; Interior Architecture; Planning, Public Policy, and Management; Art; History of Art and Architecture; Arts and Administration; Product Design; and Historic Preservation. The School environment is one of cooperation, association and mutual interest in the history, teaching, and practice of placemaking and the arts.

The Department includes approximately 90 undergraduate and 60 graduate students, 9 full-time faculty members, a dynamic pool of adjunct and visiting faculty, and one full-time staff member.

We offer an accredited BLA and MLA, a post-professional MLA, and a Ph.D. in Landscape Architecture, as well as a Minor in Landscape Architecture that attracts students from across the university.

Eugene, Oregon, is located at the southern end of the Willamette Valley in a metropolitan area of approximately 235,000 people. Eugene is a one-hour drive from the Pacific Ocean, one hour from the Cascade Mountains, and two hours from Portland.

Qualifications:

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture or a related field, and have demonstrated potential to engage in integrative, scholarly research and disseminate the results. Previous teaching experience is preferred, and strong consideration will be given to candidates with a doctoral degree in the history of landscape architecture or a related field.
