Ph.D Student Opportunities

Hydro-meteorology and climatology group at the School of Geography and Earth Science, is seeking applications for three Ph.D student opportunities starting winter or fall session, 2015.

Details are given below:

(1)    Ph.D Student – Micrometeorological measurements. The goal of this work is to explore the impacts of climate change, extreme weather events and forest management activities on carbon, water and nutrient cycles in an age-sequence of temperate forests and a deciduous stand  in Southern Ontario, Canada. Eddy covariance systems are being used to measure carbon, water and energy flux are four forest sites including both conifer and deciduous stands.  These sites are part of the Turkey Point Flux Station.

(2)    Ph.D student – Hydrologic Modelling. The main objective of this work is to simulate carbon, water and energy exchange processes at catchment or watershed scale using a hydrologic model and determine how these processes may be influenced by climate change and extreme weather events. This work is part of newly funded FloodNet Project.

(3)    Ph.D student – Greenhouse gas emission from automobiles. The goal of this work is to explore greenhouse gas emissions and their dispersion in urban environments and how they may change by increasing adoption of electric vehicles. This work is part of Electric Mobility Project and will be conducted in collaboration with the McMaster Institute for Transportation and Logistics (MITL).

Review of the applications will begin immediately. Qualified candidates should submit a cover letter, resume, copy of their grades transcripts and names of two referees to Dr. Altaf Arain at address listed below.  Modeling students must have strong programming skills in Fortran, Matlab or R and familiarity with Linux or Unix.
