Post-Doc position at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry

Jena, Germany

We are seeking a highly-motivated and collaborative Post-Doc with a PhD in environmental and quantitative/computational sciences (e.g. geo-ecology, environmental science, biogeochemistry, biology, applied mathematics, physics, or computer science).

The objective of the PostDoc project is to gain further understanding on the role and interaction of water/nutrient (N and P) availability in determining CO2 and water fluxes, water use efficiency, and their temporal variability at ecosystem level by combining eddy covariance with a manipulation experiment, near surface remote sensing data, and terrestrial biosphere models. The successful candidate will be involved primarily in different field experiments aimed at understanding the interactions between nutrient, water availability and carbon fluxes in a tree-grass system. The field sites are located in Spain, with periodic visits during planned field campaigns and activities. The ideal candidate must have experience with eddy covariance flux measurements and data elaboration. Experience with hyperspectral data collection and measurements, and terrestrial biosphere models is also required. Detailed knowledge of terrestrial carbon, nitrogen and phosporous cycles in semi-arid systems is an asset as well.

The position will be at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (Jena, Germany) in the Biogeochemical Integration Department. The position is for 2 year and the conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences. The position can be extended according to fund availability and achievements. The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply. The Max Planck Society is committed to employing more handicapped individuals and especially encourages them to apply.

Please send your applications including a letter of interest, CV, and two references to Dr. Mirco Migliavacca and Dr Nuno Carvalhais via email ( mmiglia@bgc-jena.mpg.de<mailto:mmiglia@bgc-jena.mpg.de>, ncarval@bgc-jena.mpg.de<mailto:ncarval@bgc-jena.mpg.de>).

The deadline for the application is September 8th, 2014.
