Call for Assistant Professor

Applied Forest Ecology, Virginia Tech University

Applications of forest ecology are central to effective and sustainable forest management. The Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation at Virginia Tech is seeking applicants for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track teaching (60%) and research (40%) appointment in Applied Forest Ecology. Specific research emphasis could come from a variety of areas such as wildland fire, forest disturbance, forest health, or silviculture.

Responsibilities: teach an undergraduate course in forest ecology for SAF-accredited curricula. Additional opportunity to teach undergraduates, commensurate with appointment, on topics such as forest health, wildland fire, or other forest-related disturbances. Develop and teach a graduate-level course in the area of specialty.

Conduct innovative research that applies concepts of forest ecology to land management and sustainability, and results in peer-reviewed publication in high-quality journals. Support graduate students and research programs with external grants and contracts. Advise undergraduate students and supervise graduate students. Actively collaborate in a multi-disciplinary context with faculty in the department, college, and university as appropriate to scholarly interests and programmatic needs.

Qualifications: Required: Ph.D. with emphasis in applied forest ecology, with at least one degree in forestry. Preferred: Demonstrated interest or experience teaching university courses and demonstration of experience or potential in research funding and publishing. Salary: Commensurate with education and experience. Starting Date: August 10, 2014.
