Professor in Biogeochemistry

Department of Applied Environmental Science. Deadline for application: June 26, 2014.

The Department of Applied Environmental Science (ITM) at Stockholm University is primarily a research organization, with ~160 employees working in environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology, atmospheric science and biogeochemistry. A major research focus of the biogeochemistry unit lies in extra-tropical climate-carbon cycle interactions, particularly at high latitudes. Anthropogenic impacts on the environment of the Baltic Sea and its catchment are another area of emphasis. ITM is embedded in a larger research environment at Stockholm University that includes the Bolin Centre for Climate Research and the Baltic Sea Centre.

With the advertised position we are aiming to further strengthen and broaden ITM’s research profile in the field of biogeochemistry. We seek a visionary research programme which is based on empirical research and includes a large-scale perspective. The successful candidate will also become head of the biogeochemistry unit, with the responsibility for finances, personnel and the work environment as well as for the development of the unit. The appointment as professor is permanent, while the unit head function is subject to review by the department board every three years.

Subject description
Biogeochemistry encompasses the study of the cycles of elements in the natural environment with the help of empirical methods.

Research, teaching and supervision. Head of the Biogeochemistry Unit.

Qualification requirements
A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching skills is qualified for employment as a professor. In order to be appointed as a professor, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

Well-documented research skills at a high international level
Strong skills in developing and leading research activities and staff
Well-documented teaching skills
All teaching positions at Stockholm University require the ability to collaborate and the general ability and suitability to perform one’s duties.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills, followed in importance by the ability to develop and lead research activities and staff. Some attention will also be given to teaching skills, administrative skills, and the ability to collaborate with the community and convey information about research and development. The assessment of research skills will focus primarily on merits within the subject area of the position.

In the case of otherwise similar qualifications, the following criteria will be used to distinguish between candidates:

A research programme that includes a large scale perspective.
Teaching and learning theory
Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education, or equivalent knowledge, is an advantage. An applicant who has not completed at least 7.5 credits of teaching and learning in higher education and is not considered to have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge should undergo such training within the first two years of employment.
