The University of Bari Aldo Moro, Italy, Phd School in Evolutionary and environmental Sciences (http://www.biologia.uniba.it/evo-amb/index.html) is opening a position for a PhD student in the field of Landscape Ecology.
The PhD study will contribute to the research activities carried out at the University of Bari Aldo Moro within the framework of the BIOdiversity multi-SOurce monitoring System: from space to habitat. 263435-BIO_SOS.
The Phd study will contribute to the overall objectives of the research team through quantitative pattern and functional connectivity analysis at both habitat and landscape levels, with the aim of site-specific, objective and innovative habitat state indicator for Natura 2000 sites. The results of the study will be exploited through peer review publications and presentations within this context.
The preferred candidate would have a background (MSc) in forest ecology, conservation biology, quantitative ecology or a related scientific field. The candidate needs a strong interest in quantitative spatial mapping and spatial statistics applied to Landscape ecology. Excellent GIS and writing skills are required, as well as field and team working attitude. Experience with programming (R, Matlab), and knowledge of Fragstats, Conefor sensinode, Gridwalk, MaxEnt, GLM and GDM is not essential but a plus.
Starting in early 2011, the successful candidate will be granted for 1-years. Following an evaluation in month 12 and in month 24 the grant will be confirmed by another year, up to three years. The successful candidate is expected to submit her /his thesis by month 36 the latest. Salary of the candidate follows Italian national regulations.
