Post-doctoral researcher position in “Simulation of mountain forest dynamics under climate change” at WSL/SLF

The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and thus of the ETH Domain. WSL focuses on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards. WSL employs approximately 600 people, of whom 140 work at SLF in Davos.

As part of the new research centre “Climate Change, Extremes, and Natural Hazards in Alpine Regions – CERC”, which was founded as part of the SLF in Davos, we are looking for a PostDoc for one year with possibility of extension starting preferably in March 2022

PostDoc in “Simulation of mountain forest dynamics under climate change” (80-100%)

Within the framework of the WSL research program CCAMM (ccamm.slf.ch), you will simulate potential future forest dynamics under a range of climate, forest management and disturbance scenarios using the forest landscape model LandClim. The goal is to identify potential cascading processes affecting the forest protection function to support protection forest management. The scenario combinations will be developed with a stakeholder panel. You will work in close collaboration with other researchers of the project “Changing forests and natural hazard risks in Davos”, as well as with WSL-SLF staff. Your work will provide valuable inputs to the WSL research program CCAMM. You will publish the results of your work in international journals and present them at national and international conferences. You hold a PhD in forest sciences, ecology or a related field. You have experience with dynamic forest development modelling, and a good knowledge of GIS, R and/or Python. A good knowledge of the ecology of mountain forests, in particular the European Alps is necessary. You are familiar with and interested in natural hazards, natural disturbances, protection forests management, and risk assessment. Very good English skills and experience in writing scientific papers are required. You are highly motivated, well-organized, independent, and demonstrate a high level of team spirit and collaboration. Your interest in practice-oriented research and your passion of working in inter- and transdisciplinary projects complete your profile.

Please send your complete application to Jasmine Zollinger, Human Resources WSL/SLF, by uploading the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered. Alessandra Bottero, phone +41 (0)81 417 02 13 (alessandra.bottero@wsl.ch), and Christian Temperli, phone +41 (0)44 739 22 87 (christian.temperli@wsl.ch), will be happy to answer any questions or offer further information.
