*** OVERVIEW ***
The 5th edition of the International Poplar Symposium (IPS-V), organised under the umbrella of the IUFRO Working Unit 2.08.04, will be held in Orvieto, Italy, 20-25 September 2010.
The theme of the symposium, “Poplars and willows: from research models to multipurpose trees for a biobased society”, addresses the increasing needs of a low-carbon, bio-based society to mobilize increasing wood and environmental resources, by utilizing the genetic and ecological potentials of poplar and willow trees.
In the last 4 years, since IPS-IV held in Nanjing, China, a wealth of information has been gathered on the links among physiology, molecular genetics and genomics to understand and improve adaptation and yield of Populus as a bioenergy and timber crop and as provider of environmental services.
*** THEMES ***
The theme of the symposium,“Poplars and willows: from research models to multipurpose trees for a biobased society”, should approach the general subject of facing the increasing needs of a low-carbon, bio-based society to mobilize increasing wood and environmental resources, by utilizing the genetic and ecological potentials of poplar and willow trees. The symposium will therefore tackle the increasing environmental concern of climate change impacts on ecosystems, especially on the scarce water resources, but also will identify the potential offered by these tree species for mitigating and solving some of these enormous, societal problems.
*** TOPICS ***
Possible scientific sessions, relating to basic and applied research subjects, are as follows:
1. Population genetics, biodiversity evaluation and conservation of genetic resources
2. Poplar genomics for breeding and selection
3. Poplar biotechnology for a low-carbon industry: wood, bio-fuels, bio-chemicals
4. Poplars and the environment: how much green is green?
5. Tree-pest interactions and signalling: lessons to improve pest resistance
6. Salicaceae as model trees for floral pathways and sex determination
7. Innovative production systems for low input tree crops
8. International cooperation for poplar research and applications
*** PAPER SUBMISSIONS ***
Scientists involved in all aspects of biology, ecology and cultivation of Salicacae are invited to present their latest scientific information and to submit an abstract of their proposed presentation, according to the main theme and the topics selected for this Symposium. A proposal submission form is available at the following web page:
