La necessità di conoscere e comprendere lo stato e la consistenza delle risorse forestali di un determinato territorio è prerogativa intrinseca del forestale, sia esso professionista o ricercatore. I calcolatori elettronici, tramite software specifici (i Sistemi Informativi Geografici o Geographic Information Systems – GIS), offrono oggi una potente infrastruttura dedicata alla rappresentazione, gestione e analisi di modelli digitali della realtà geografica del mondo che ci circonda, superando le possibilità offerte dalle tradizionali metodologie basate sulle cartografie analogiche.

La Società Italiana di Selvicoltura e Ecologia Forestale (SISEF) annuncia il suo IX Congresso Nazionale, che si terrà a Bolzano dal 16 al 19 settembre 2013. Il Congresso, che ha come co-organizzatori la Facoltà di Scienze e Tecnologia della Libera Università di Bolzano, la Ripartizione Foreste della Provincia di Bolzano e la European Academy of Bozen/Bolzano, sarà focalizzato su tematiche di ricerca inerenti la multifunzionalità e la gestione sostenibile degli ecosistemi forestali montani.
