PhD position on GHG-modelling at the UFZ in Halle
Segnalato da Federico Magnani
PhD Student (m/f) in Soil Process Modelling
The Department od Soil Physics at the Helmhotz Centre for Environmentel Research GmbH – UFZ is offering a position as PhD-student for three years within the group C-N-Dynamics lead by Uwe Franko.
The position is viable part of SP02 “Modelling and measurements of land use specific greenhouse gas emissions” and is integrated in the framework of the CARBIOCIAL project (http://www.uni-goettingen.de/de/211024.html).
The main focus of this position is “Modelling of land use specific greenhouse gas emissions”.
The aim of this PhD work is to test, select and validate a mechanistic model that is able to describe the impact of land use changes on GHG emissions including SOM dynamics. The validation data base will consist of results from field measurements carried out by co-operating teams and additional own lab experiments. Models that should be tested are Candy-GHG, DNDC/PnET-N-DNDC and DayCent.
Results have to be analysed to find an optimal solution for an up-scaling of GHG emission in the region of Southern Amazonia. In close collaboration with other sub-projects the final model shall be used for regional greenhouse gas inventories and scenario simulation for Southern Amazonia taking into account past and present land use conditions as well as possible future developments for a time period of about 30 years.
Applicants must hold a Diploma or Masters providing a serious basic in soil science and with some background in scientific fields such as environmental modelling, environmental data analysis and database management. Programming experiences will be an asset. We expect very good written and oral communication skills in English and ability to work in an international interdisciplinary team.
Fieldwork and laboratory work are important components of this research; a German driver’s license is highly preferred.
The place of work is Halle, Germany. Salary will be according to the appropriate civil service level 13 at 50% (TVöD).
Women are explicitly encouraged to apply in order to increase their share in science and research.
Physically handicapped persons will be favoured if they are equally qualified. The successful candidate will be recruited for three years under employment contract with the UFZ.
The PhD students participate in the established Helmholtz Graduate School HIGRADE (http://www.ufz.de/index.php?en=11429).
To apply, please send a complete CV with publication list and certificates, your contact information and a one-page cover letter stating your qualifications, background and reasons for applying.
Applications should be send to the Personnel Department of the Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research, PO Box 500136, D-04318 Leipzig, Germany, or by email to application@ufz.de until May, 18(th) 2012 (code digit 42/2012).
