Lecturer position with a focus on Geoinformation Systems and Regional Geography

The Humboldt-Universität of Berlin seeks highly qualified and motivated candidates, with a passion for teaching and a track record in using geodata for different application domains relevant for geography and with a focus on regional geography.

The Lecturer position will take responsibility in developing and implementing a state-of-the-art curriculum on Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geomedia and regional geography in the study programs of the Geography Department, teaming up with colleagues at the institute. Key responsibilities of the new Lecturer position will include:

  • Developing and implementing (a) courses teaching basic GIS, geomedia and
    cartography skills to students in our teachers’ education programs, as well as (b)
    basic GIS and geodata processing skills to students in our BA/BSc programs,
  • Offering courses on “Regional Geography”,
  • Taking leadership in coordinating and developing our syllabus in GIS and geodata
    processing, together with colleagues at the institute,
  • Offering elective courses (e.g., more advanced GIS classes, excursions, field
    courses, study projects) at the Geography Department,
  • Supporting and advising students in the context of their Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis
    The position has a teaching load of 12 hours (LVS) per week.

Required Background:

PhD degree in geography, geosciences, environmental sciences, or a similar discipline. We expect a passion for and a track record in higher education teaching. Advising students at both Bachelor’s and Master’s level, as well as willingness to support students in their studies is expected.

Required skills include a strong theoretical and practical background in geoinformation concepts, cartography and GIS software (in QGIS and/or ArcGIS). Good skills in statistical analysis with spatial data
(in R) are of additional benefit.

The teaching language is predominantly German.

We expect good communication skills, as well as willingness to teach in teams and in an international environment. Experience in scripting languages (e.g., Python, GDAL) are highly welcome. Links between academic and non-academic sectors are a plus. Working languages will be German and English. Applicants of non-German language of origin with a university degree obtained outside the German-speaking world need to provide proof of German language skills at least at CEFR C1 level.
