Open position – Scientist in Forest Inventory Statistics and Analysis – WSL
The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.
The Research Unit “Forest Resources and Forest Management” monitors and analyses changes in the landscape and in the forest and seeks a Scientist in “Forest Inventory Statistics and Analysis” (80%-100%).
You are responsible for developing research in the field of forest inventory statistics, with special focus on the Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI) and its future development. In particular, you (i) plan and manage research projects in the fields of forest inventories, statistics and inventory design, in national and international groups/consortia; (ii) support and advice researchers, cantonal offices and national forest inventories worldwide in inventory design and statistics; (iii) carry out independent verification of the results of the Swiss NFI. Lecturing at university level, organization of workshops, publications on international and national scientific journals will be parts of your tasks. You work in close collaboration with the Swiss NFI program, implementing research results in teaching and publications, and leading the acquisition of projects in the national/international landscape.
You have a University degree in forestry, statistics, or related disciplines (University, ETH) and you are a specialist in forest inventory statistics with a PhD in this field. You have ample knowledge and skill in inventory statistics, statistical design, and are able to deal with design-based and model-based statistical inference. You have experience in coordinating projects, and are creative and communicative. Knowledge of the Swiss NFI is an advantage. You are fluent in English, plus a Swiss national language. Good command of German is an advantage. You have an independent and structured way of working. Conceptual skills and professional conduct complete your profile.
