Postdoc-Position – Impacts of high-end climate scenarios on European forests and forestry

at the  ETH Zurich (Switzerland)

The Forest Ecology Group at ETH is a dynamic interdisciplinary research team that exam-ines both theoretical and applied questions in forest ecology using a combination of empirical and modeling techniques. The overarching aim of the group is to further our understanding of the structure and function of forest ecosystems, with a particular focus on mountain areas such as the European Alps.
The Forest Ecology Group at ETH is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral fellow to examine the impact of high-end climate scenarios and land use change on European forests and forestry. The ultimate objective is to provide empirically-grounded, transformative science that quanti-fies and explains the consequences of high-end climate scenarios for both decision-makers and society. The research will use a forest simulation model (the candidate model is ForClim), to describe natural and managed forest dynamics across Europe. The work may also include improving the representation of boreal forests, and as well as growth and mortality responses to extreme climate.
This research is part of the EU FP7 project IMPRESSIONS (“Impacts and risks from higher-end scenarios: Strategies for innovative solutions”). The position thus is embedded in a large, multi-disciplinary consortium of researchers across Europe. The fellow will use scenarios of climate and land use change provided by other groups within this project, and will have the opportunity to collaborate with other researchers from a wide range of fields. The results of this work will be embedded in an innovative multi-scale integrated assessment approach to improve the analysis of cross-scale interactions and cross-sectoral benefits, conflicts and trade-offs. The starting date is 1 January 2015 with a duration of 2 years; an extension by another year is possible.

Required qualifications include a PhD in forest sciences, environmental sciences, ecology, forestry, geography, biology, landscape ecology, or a related field. Candidates should have experience with dynamic modeling techniques and computer programming. Familiarity with object-oriented languages such as C# or C++ would be an asset, as would experience using R or similar data/statistical languages, and a good knowledge of European forest manage-ment approaches.
